Who will like this? Readers who do not mind wandering around aimlessly through the first 100 pages of a 250 page book. If you’re a Genre reader (fantasy, thriller, etc.) you probably won’t like this. If you’re a Book Club reader, you probably won’t like this. If you’re a Bestsellers reader, you probably won’t like this. Maybe that’s a phrase you’ve heard before, but for me it namely means that most readers will not like it, but a segment of them will LOVE it. This is a book that falls into a category I’ve come to describe as for A Certain Kind of Reader®. If you’re a Book Clu I almost DNFed this one, and maybe I should have, but in the end I wanted to be able to fully review this book and I don’t think it’s fair to do that only having read half of it. This is a unique and compelling story.Piranesi’s house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. The language and descriptions of the carvings and the ocean are beautiful and evocative. It’s clear from the beginning that Piranesi is not telling the whole story, and the reveal is masterfully handled over the course of the novel. He frequently refers to a person he calls The Other, whom he meets twice a week to discuss a Great and Secret research project. The ocean lives in the house too, and Piranesi learns to chart and predict the tides that fill the halls and flood the wings of the house. The story is told in first person by a narrator, Piranesi, who lives almost alone in a house that he describes as though it is a labyrinth, infinite halls filled with thousands of unique statues. It’s a lot shorter than Jonathan Strange, but it packs just as hefty a punch. Norell fame) has come out with a new novel called Piranesi. Susanna Clarke (of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Here’s a book that just came out this fall and is unlike any book I have ever read before.
